LIBRARY SCANDAL: TOP CROYDON OFFICERS AND COUNCILLORS SLAMMED IN EVIDENCE TO PARLIAMENT

jerry.green85 says: "Mike Thanks for your comment. If you read what Cllr Godfrey says in paragraph three: "If you set out to deliberately mislead...." then the fourth paragraph is correct in the context of the article. Elsewhere on this site you'll find a report of a Library Campaign meeting in Christ Church, Gipsy Hill - headed 'Croydon could face Ombudsman probe over library' in which I quoted campaigner Robbie Gibson as saying: "Croydon's document says the library costs Croydon's ratepayers £189,000 a year - but ignores the exceptional value for money associated with the library's unique and independent status. "Compared to Croydon's libraries it's SEVEN times more efficient than their Central and devolved libraries." I hope this clarifies the position. Jerry"

CROYDON LAUNCH 11TH HOUR 'CONSULTATION' ON LIBRARY SERVICES

Simon Lynn says: "Godwin's Law dictates that the longer an online discussion goes on, the higher the likelihood of a comparison to the Nazis. I fully back the campaign to save UNJL and appreciate how frustrating it is that Croydon Council do not seem willing to undertake a fully accessible consultation on it's future. However, comparing a poorly put together council questionnaire to the ruthless totalitarianism of Goebbels and the Nazi party is hardly likely to win the campaign any new supporters."

KICC Church Will Not Appeal the Council Decision

JRussell says: "How much of your wealth have you transferred to the KICC moneymen Ola? KICC is nothing to do with God and everything to do with the pyramid selling of the words of a false prophet and the promotion of the Prosperity Gospel . The motivation for the false prophet is money. Here's a reminder of what the bible has to say: Matthew 7:15-23, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits" Jeremiah 14:14 Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds. Jeremiah 23:16 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. Whoever fights KICC fights with God on their side to purge this land of mamon :-)"

Kaiser Soze says: "Tim Sharville raises an interesting point. Since The KICC deprived this area of a golden opportunity for regeneration many people have had a long hard look at them, the way they operate, the way they twist the words of the Bible to justify their obsession with money, and their wider activities, including their activities on the foreign exchange market. The question "How is can they justify their charitable status?" has to be asked. What wider good does this organisation deliver? A close look at the KICC and the way it behaves to those who aren't their congregants gives an impression of a 'Church' which shows little Christianity or Charity to the wider community."

Kaiser Soze says: "The Bingo Hall fell victim to the well documented boardroom upheavals of 'Gala' Entertainment Ltd. It wasn't a question of it not being viable. The facts are that The KICC outbid City Screen, the cinema operator, for the building. They were able to do this no doubt because they have charitable status, which means that they don't have to pay tax on their considerable annual turnover. It is estimated that charitable status is worth £1.5 million p.a. to the KICC. A cinema would have been a huge game changer for this area. It would have increased footfall and trade, it would have helped regenerate church road, there would have been a club for kids and City Screen also works with local schools. The KICC brings nothing to this area but arrogance, and a contempt for the local community. Your wrong about Walthamstow too. Many local business and Councillors rue the day the KICC came to town. They even have stewards in municipal car parks directing 'The faithful' to parking spaces, which does't do a lot for local trade. Don't forget their motto "Taking Territories" There is also the issue of just how 'Christian' The KICC is. Have a look at some of the concerns expressed by the Bishop of Croydon. Finally, Wimbledon had their ground sold from underneath them. It wasn't a case of having no support. Apart from this and all your other inaccuracies, I thought your post was quite good in parts."

Fat Tony says: "If the "Community" so much wanted a cinema and a Bingo hall, why on earth did they both close in the first place??? If you don't look after what you have, you're going to lose it, and if history is any teacher you only have to look around you at sites that have fallen into disrepair through lack of use and so-called "community support". Such was the support of Wimbledon Football Club that it had to move first to Crystal Palace and then to Milton Keynes. This tribal mentality and following the crowd even though you don't where it's going is what ruins communities. Seems folk would rather have the building empty than see thousands of people not just come to the area but people within the area benefit from this possible development. Would local businesses benefit? Ask local businesses in the Leyton/Walthamstow area...traffic is a small price to pay for the revitalization of any area."

KICC Church Will Not Appeal the Council Decision

j russel says: "Nice sentiments Aaron but having a large organisation taking over the residentail roads and town centre to accomodate it's members' needs is not exactly spreading the love. :o And despite what you say KICC have shown no interest or love for this community. To date it is hell bent on it's own needs and prosperity, this is evident in the lack of consultation, the refusal to set out it's intended use of the only entertainment building in town and the statement issued through it's agents to Bromley council at the planning hearing. The statement came across as a threat and went a bit like this: "KICC would like to point out that 25 Church Road could be used for much larger capacity crowds. If KICC did not get permission to use it as a church then it would use 25 Church Road to draw maxiumum capcity crowds and this will cause problems with parking and traffic nusiance for the community." The message was one of war not love Aaron.  And it is not just be the local residents, traders and patrons of the town centre who will be massively impacted by congregant traffic and parking demand but KICC members themselves. Be interesting to see what the head honchos put on the licensing application but one thing's for sure the application will be scrutinised and fought every step of the way."

Grace says: "So it's the hard core greenos v the hard core build a giant shopping centre on the park mob. That's not in fighting, more a monumentous stand off. Those groups could never find a compromise. The New Crystal Palace scheme is massive and wouldn't go down well with even the soft core environmentalis ts. IMO the two major flaws are where they want to build it and what they want to put in it. I would support the scheme were it proposed for the Purley Way or maybe the old Croydon Airfield but not in a public park. I thought Bromley had carried out a public consultation some years ago and that the result of that was the masterplan. Which unfortunately includes selling of the edge of the park for housing, over 100 homes. Shame the hard core green lobby mentioned weren't hard enough to prevent that. And aren't CPFC putting in a takeover bid for the stadium and NSC so they can run an O2 style events arena for 40K! I wonder if they'll be anything left of the park in ten years time, bet it will have been parcelled off to the developers."

Sam says: "1 year down the road and where are they now. Completely ignored Bromley councils decision and will not talk to any of the community no matter how many times they are asked. So much for the community etc, etc. Even KICC said the car parking was going to be a headache so what do they do, throw in a few hundred more seats to make that side of things really bad! We see the pastors turn up in their nice new Mercs and Beamers paid for by their "charity" they are all under FSA investigation for financial misconduct, aka fiddling.
Screaming Alice says: "It's a sad day when Bromley Council judges the community and bases its actions on the dysfunctional posters on Virtual Norwood. Don't they know it's called Vitriol Norwood amongst the locals! Reading Vitriol Norwood is a very lazy way of staying informed and it will never give them a true impression of local people's views as a hardcore green lobby on Vitriol Norwood bully any cposters who wanrt commercial develpment off the site. If Bromley really want to know what the community think, why don't they get out on the sreet and ask them. They shouldn't however ask people if they want ten or twenty trees, tghey should ask them if they would like a tree palace or a real rebuilt Crystal Palace that would fund the park on an ongoing basis and provide much needed entertainment facilities and a thousand jobs.."

Screaming Alice says: "Two plans for the park; 1) £136 million pound Masterplan that will provide hardly anything that prople voted for (he most popular elements ie museum and subway etc will have to be privately operated) NO funding except a poss £12 million pounds received from selling off some of the land for housing (only agreed in return for good stuff which is no longer happening) No suggestion of how the park will be funded in future. 2) A new Crystal Palace commercially operated by a Trust (with reps from council, community and business) It had total private funding in place. Would have cosgt the taspayer nothing and would have provided ongoing funding for the park. Guess which scheme the council branded as 'Pie in the Sky'"

Screaming Alice says: "It really doesn't matter how much the masterplan is going to cost because it is never going to happen anyway, It's rather like discussing what colour dress your daughter wants for christmas when you don't have the money to buy her one anyway! :-* The five year, five million pound consultation process which used local groups to rubber stamp a pre conceived plan, culminated in the attendees of the public consultation event being offered a deal. The deal was this. We will give you a brand new sports centre, give you 33 more accessible acres of parkland, remove oodles of horrible concrete, facilitate a new museum and tree top walk and implement all kinds of exciting ecologically sustainable elements including solar power, grey water usage and energy plant In return for you accepting that we can sell off some of the pand within the park perimiter for housing. The present masterplan bears no resemblance to the one in the deal, except of course for the housing. Where is the new sports centre or the tree top walk? What happened to the sustainability elements? The one thing that will probably will go ahead is the tree palace on the top site. Two interesting things about the tree palace a) It was unpopular in the consultation process and yet appeared on the masterplan anyway and b) although in the masterplan it is described as a tree palace with fountain and boulevard, in fact the trees will disguise a tar and chipped car park that ouncil will need for events. ."

deirdre mahon says: "Aside from the threat of closure, the most shocking aspect of this is the behaviour of Croydon Councillors in repeatedly ignoring that the agreement states that two LOCAL councillors must be part of the decision making body. Instead, Croydon has appointed councillors from wards at the furthest end of their borough who have no vested interest in keeping the library open – in fact quite the opposite. Lambeth on the other hand, has honoured the agreement. Despite what Croydon has said, their behaviour says otherwise. Let's hope those at the centre of this can find a new platform from which to move forward with the help and support of the wider community."

LIBRARY MEETING ENDS IN CHAOS - AGAIN

timsharville says: "Here is my idea for the Library. Make it a co-op, like John Lewis, make the members partners, make the reference library smaller and create the most wonderful glass fronted children's cafe reading room at the top over looking London. Get a local architect to price it all up, contact the councils and ask for funding for the next 3 years, then go it alone. From public to owned by the people who use it in 3 years, it's the only way it will survive!"

tonto says: "For accuracy, the Croydon team knew that the Lambeth Cllrs were not attending the AGM as Lambeth Cabinet Member, Cllr Florence Nosegbe, had telephoned Cllr Bashford earlier that day to advise her of the reasons why- a direct consequence of Croydon’s continued refusal to appoint two local Croydon councillors to the Committee, as required by the 2006 amendment to the Joint Library agreement, (agreed by both parties). There are concerns at the prospect of a Joint Library Committee dominated by Croydon Cabinet Members – who chair the Joint Library Committee. The Committee chair holds a casting vote in the event of any deadlock or failure to agree on future Joint Library policy, possible cuts, or even closure of the service. The Croydon Cllrs are from Selsdon and Ballards Ward, Fairfield Ward and Croham Ward. Now why would Croydon select Cllrs from non-local Wards to sit on the UNJL committee as opposed to local Ward Cllrs, who actually represent many people in the surrounding area that use and value the UNJL? This is all about cuts, cuts and more cuts. The current UNJL Croydon members do not represent residents (read voters) who use or have even heard of UNJL. When push comes to shove it would be politically prudent to save services within their own Wards not Upper Norwood."

Chris Palace says: "Like a lot of other people I went in to try this place out and had much the same experience. Yes it's like standing in a branch of IKEA but the prices... THE PRICES! You might be used to charging people over £4 a pint in Notting Hill but that ain't gonna fly round here. Let's just say that again... OVER £4 A PINT. And landlords wonder why people buy booze at the supermarket and drink it at home..."

Sally says: "This really represents the worst sort of self delusion. We're not Mayfair, we're Crystal Palace. I popped into this pub the other night and though it seems OK (though very bland and IKEA-like), the prices were eye-watering. Just because you charge massively over the odds for a drink doesn't automatically make you a posh venue. I won't be visiting again, and I don't know anyone else who would after experiencing your extremely high prices. If you are reading this, owners of the pub, drop the prices. You can't honestly suggest that £3.75 a pint is going to bankrupt you? How much can all that IKEA furniture have cost, anyway?"
