Crystal Palace Transition Town

transmitter

UPDATED

We are a newly formed group of Crystal Palace enthusiasts who wish to see Crystal Palace as an established Transition Town.

We would like Crystal Palace to disconnect from the current unsustainable model of dependence on fossil fuels. What would Crystal Palace be like after oil?

Peak Oil refers to the way that our current economy and lifestyle are almost wholly dependent on oil and with oil being a limited resource, it will soon become more difficult to come by and will become prohibitively expensive. Peak Oil and Climate Change are two issues that will have a potentially huge impact on the way we live - environmentally, economically and socially. How do we prepare as a community?

We are not looking to pass blame or dissect the science, we are just choosing to look at things positively and pragmatically, and act together as our community, to bring about positive change in the face of these challenges and opportunities.

Totnes in Devon was the first Transition Town

We know that the Crystal Palace local folk have what it takes to come up with creative solutions to help us be better prepared for the future – that is to be locally resilient to the Global Changes that lie ahead.

Working toward self sufficiency in food, water and energy will see us less dependent on these from external sources.

Also, through learning together, sharing what we know and supporting each other, we can begin to rediscover the spirit of community. A community that is local, true, vibrant and working toward sustainability. That is one living in a way that 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs.' - Brundtland (1987). It must be said that we already have a brilliant Sense of Community right here in Crystal Palace!

We plan to hold a series of film screenings, talks and get-togethers like Green Drinks so to find out more, or if you have ideas and wish to contribute in any way, please get in touch.

Also, still very much in our embryonic stage, we are on the hunt for a logo. If you have a flair for design and would like to send something to us – please do. The design brief is fairly loose in that – its up to you really. So let us know if you're interested. We'll post the logos online for others to comment and vote.

Went to the 2nd Green Drinks and was great to meet some other green locals, well done whoever organised it. Even the barmaid :-) asked what was going on and we gave here a badge.

I agree with STuart, let's go to the Grape and Grain maybe next time, support the local trade and all that. The WH is doing well form the look of it!

What did you go over last night, I am sorry I couldn't be there but would like to know how it went!

Defo see you at the next one.

Great idea!

Hi Alan,
So sorry you missed us. Point taken though we should have alerted bar staff. We had a sign on one of the tables and flyers about the CPTT logo comp on the tables. Most of us were wearing green - I 'heart' CP badges. There was a group of at least 12 inside and then 10 or so outside. The place was buzzing with great ideas and new connections. It wasn't a structured meeting - just people networking and getting to know each other. Really sorry again. See you at the next one?
