Beckenham’s finest community choir FUNdamentally Gospel kick off a series of hit concerts and summer appearances to embark on their goal of raising money to enrich the lives of those less fortunate then themselves within the London Borough of Bromley & surrounding boroughs.
The first concert on Wednesday 20th July at 20.00, will not only be a great evening of music featuring an uplifting mixture of pop, soul, gospel and world music, it will act as the launch party of their associated charity Community Music In Action, which aims to enrich the lives of local people through music. The choir has pledged to raise enough money to fund a minimum of 3 community music projects a year. The aim of the concert is first and foremost to provide an evening of fantastic entertainment, but also to engage and encourage the local community in helping with this goal.
Experienced musical director Fiona Bolton launched the choir in January 2010, because she wanted to give residents of Beckenham and the local area with a passion for music, the chance to unite through song. The choir has gone from strength to strength and now has 30 members. As their popularity has grown, their regular concerts have been added to, through invites to sing at festivals and private functions. The members have already raised more than £1,000 to charities close to their hearts, and seeing how a collective purpose was having a positive effect on their own lives began to formulate a plan as to how the benefits they had gained from singing as a community could be passed back—the idea of Community Music In Action was born.
All proceeds raised by the choir will be used to fund music projects within the London Borough of Bromley & neighbouring boroughs, mainly targeting vulnerable groups of people who, for social or economic reasons, may not otherwise have the opportunity to access activities like these. The trustees of Community Music In Action are currently liaising with several potential partners keen to benefit from the first project.
Founder Fiona Bolton said “I am delighted that my vision of uniting the local community and enriching people’s lives through song has grown. We now have a purpose and we are all so passionate, not only about the music we make together but sharing this with our wider community. It’s amazing to think just what we can achieve. Raising money for those who will really benefit from discovering the powerful impact music can have on their lives. “ She added “We are currently in talks with various local projects who are in desperate need of something like this and hope to announce our first partner at our concert on Wednesday 20th July. We are suggesting people make a minimum donation of £5 for a ticket to the concert, a small price to pay for a great night of entertainment and the knowledge that they will be contributing to a great local cause”.
