In our local area the topic, which I get asked about most as a Parliamentary Candidate, is crime and the fact that nothing seems to being done about it. It is for this reason that I have recently launched my Enough is Enough campaign.
Two years ago a lady in Upper Norwood called Mary invited me into her home to discuss with me a local issue close to her heart. She stressed that she had two young boys – one aged 14 and the other 16. She was worried because it was a Saturday and her children like many others would be going out with their friends that evening. She would not sleep until they got home and in light of many local stories she was genuinely concerned as to whether her children would in fact be coming home that night.
Every parent has this fear. But crime is becoming much more common for all of us.
I remember, as a child being brought up in London and that if someone was attacked or murdered this would immediately become a national story.
However in the last ten years or so crime and in fact murder have become all too common. Over fifty people murdered in Croydon in the last six years.
In many ways we almost become de-sensitised to such things. We have all seen the figures and they are terrifying. Clearly we need as politicians to take a fresh approach to crime and involve ourselves even more with the local community to find a solution.
This is why I launched the Enough is Enough campaign, which is a major anti-crime campaign in the North Croydon.
Posters supporting my “Enough is Enough: Croydon North says No to Crime” are up in over 250 shops in Thornton Heath, Norbury, Upper Norwood and West Croydon.
My Enough is Enough campaign intends to raise the issue of crime locally and demand that more be done to help local people.
In particular the campaign calls for less paperwork for police officers to allow more police on the streets; a sensible approach to anti-social behaviour; less of this caution culture and proper transparency on criminal sentences.
I am particularly concerned with the topic of cautions. Some violent offenders are being let off with a police caution and that such warnings were also being issued wrongly for other crimes. This follow cases in which cautions have been issued for rape and an assault in which a man smashed a beer glass into a pub landlady's face. I also think it sends the wrong message where prisoners are allowed out of jail before their minimum terms were completed.
Latest figures show that a total of 2.2 million people were cautioned between 2000 and 2008, including more than 550,000 who were given repeat cautions. Of those, 51,874 had been cautioned four times and 104,915 on three occasions.
We've had twelve years of empty promises from a Government that has presided over a big increase in antisocial behaviour and violent crime. Under Labour too many offenders just seem to get away with it. It's time things changed
Well, Enough is Enough. People want more be done and for the government to take their problems seriously. Less talk, less cliché and more action on this issue.
But I would also like to hear from local people, not only with their stories but with their thoughts on a solution. Yes more needs to be done – but what do you think is the solution. I would be delighted to discuss so please contact me at Jason@jasonhadden.co.uk
