Quoting timsharville:
I do think the Chamber has the best intentions for the area only in the sense it wants to stimulate trade, commerce and footfall for the local businesses but also has environmental issues at heart. Hannah Bougen gave a talk only a month ago on sustainably, green business and the environment, was very interesting.

I personally wouldn't build a damn thing on the top site. But it won't be long before we get The Glades 2. Take my word for it.

It is good to hear that you do not support the New Crystal Palace Tim because Glades 2 is exactly what will we get by the time it has been value engineeered - I am just surprised you have not registered that opinion with the Chamber.
We already have a masterplan for the park which the community should support. There are a number of funding options that could be explored to make incremental improvements. Masterplans can not be delivered over night - something of this scale could take up to 15 -20 years. if the chamber was really serious about sustainability, green business and the environment it would work with what it has and focus on the Triangle. I find the whole proposal completely at odds with plans to make Crystal Palace a transition town. The carbon footprint of a Rebuilt Crystal Palace would be enormous. I think it is time for chamber members to really think about what this actually means stand up and make your voice heard because if you don't then yes you will end up with Glades II under the guise of a new crystal palace.

Tim what makes you think the NCP proposal won't be as bad as a Glades2. From what I understand it proposes to cram even more in so as well as extensive retail there's the 250 room hotel, conference centre, galleries, exhibition centre and multi use leisure complex or pay to play zone.
Thing that causes most concern is that the NCP team claim to have massive community support for their proposal. They claim an exhibition in one of the promoter's second hand shops was where the support was generated. I went to that exhibition 3 years ago and entered my details and comments into a visitor's book. My comments were not supportive of the pastiche building. I was contacted last week by the NCP team who had listed me as a supporter! They did not use that email to update me on the extensive changes to the original scheme, o no, they were urging me to write to politicians to log my support for their multiplex. You really couldn't make this up, the misuse of public support to mislead politicians into backing their scheme, it's a shambles.
By the way it is good to hear you are not an NCP backer.

I can see how this looks from a public point of view Simon, Chambers can seem self promoting and cliquey but the CPNCC has an open door policy to anyone who wants to join, regarding the top site I am personally all for open spaces and and a sympathetic development on the top site. If anything at all.

I do think the Chamber has the best intentions for the area only in the sense it wants to stimulate trade, commerce and footfall for the local businesses but also has environmental issues at heart. Thing is Tim I just live here therefore don't comply the Chamber's membership criteria. It is good that you have been able to enjoy the network within the Chamber and that it has been very good for your business. However the CoC has now stated it's intention to change this town into an international hub. A global destination. Whereas that may be what a handful of short-sighted businesses see as being good for footfall the tens of thousands of people who live here don't share that view, have not been consulted and feel betrayed by the Chamber and it's members.

As far as I am concerned the Chamber now reflect local sme business better than ever, I have been a member for 2 years and only once have I seen the presentation on the New Crystal Palace. Which BTW is only a proposal, it's open to scrutiny. AT least Ray is trying something to stimulate the local economy.

The rest of the time it's busy with local issues of all sorts and very open to new members, joining and democratically voting and discussing local projects.

Why not come and join, have your say, get involved.

Great to see Laura & Jess from local independent cake companyGobble Gobble on front cover. At last the Journal now resembles what it is, a rag for local businesses and not a New Crystal Palace promtionary brochure. The cover article, The Chamber Hits Back, made interesting reading. I remain unconvinced that the Chamber of Commerce, under leadership of the New Crystal Palace team, has not been used as a vehicle for promotion of the New Crystal Palace. It's crystal clear that it has!

We think the Journal could be a great way to connect with the business community.
