A 16 YEAR OLD Upper Norwood youth has grabbed - a London Youth Games cross country gold medal !
Paul Burgess raced home ahead of 185 other runners in the under-13s boys' race finishing with an impressive time of six minutes 45 seconds. He came from behind in the final stages and only secured the gold by the narrowest of margins following a photo-finish.
The event in Parliament Hill Fields was the first on the 2012 Youth Games calendar and saw each of Croydon’s six teams place in the top-ten out of the 29 borough’s who entered. This gave Croydon 5th place overall, setting the borough off to a good start against strong competition from across the capital.
Special guest for the day was Scott Overall – a former London Youth Games competitor and the only UK runner to have so far achieved the qualifying time needed to compete in the London 2012 marathon for Team GB.
The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, now into its 35th year, stands out as Europe’s largest youth sporting event. Teams compete in a range of over 30 sports to decide on the overall champion borough, with the games culminating in a weekend of events every July at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace.
